How To Build A Patio Cover

If you build a patio cover, you’ll no longer have to worry about dumping all the furniture in the house when it rains. For more efficient results, you’ll need the help of at least two individuals.

Required Tools and Materials

A box of deck screws (2”)
4 x 4 wood (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
Treated wood (2 x 4, 8 pieces)
Saw
Hammer
Measuring tape
Concrete (2 bags)
Plastic (enough to cover the entire area)
A box of nails (2”)
Shovel
Water
Level
Drill with screwdriver

Create a Foundation

Use the shovel to dig a hole for the four posts. Make each one 18” deep. Gauge the dimensions of the hole’s outer perimeter. Take one of the 2 x 4s. Saw the 2 x 4 so it’ll fit the outer perimeter.

To build a patio cover, you need to fasten the 2 x 4’s with some nails. Put a few more 2 x 4s above the one you created. Repeat the process for the other three holes.

Install the Posts

Put the 4 x 4 in the hole. You’ll need the help of your friends to get it upright. Add some concrete and water around the hole. If necessary, use the level to ensure it’s balanced. Put some wood struts around the post. Remove the struts when the concrete has dried. Repeat these steps for the three posts.

After the concrete dries, spray some dirt around it. Now put the 2 x 4 frames above the 4 x 4 posts. To build a patio cover effectively, fasten the screws around the top part. Set the plastic around each post’s top. Join the plastic and frame together with the nails.

Freestanding and Attached Patio Covers

A freestanding patio means you have to put the cover at all four corners. This will require more work. The attached patio is easier to build. You can use the roofing to install the patio cover. The patio cover can also be full or partial. There are also several materials to choose from. In terms of size these structures don’t go beyond a single storey.

Tips and Warnings

You’ll need to measure the angles and pitch if you’re going to build a patio cover. For the support beams, you’ll need help. You’ll also need help if you need to put in roof shingles and adjust the rafters.

Three things will guarantee the success of this undertaking. The first is to make sure the measurements are accurate. Inaccurate measurements will lead to supply shortages and ill fitting materials.

The second is to allow the concrete time to dry. Don’t install the roof until the cement has dried around the posts. Installing prematurely might cause the cover to collapse.

The third is to use caution. You can prevent wounds and accidents by following the directions for using the equipment. You (and your friends) must wear goggles and other protective gear.

Finally, you should build a patio cover prior to the rainy season. This will allow you to finish the task quickly. When the rain comes, you’ll be sitting pretty.
